AgieCharmilles Mikron HSM 500LP Exceptionally accurate High Speed Vertical Machining Center The HSM500LP uses a gantry-style or fixed portal design. The X-axis is on the base of the machine; the Y- axis and Z-axis are mounted on the portal. This design minimizes the total floor space required by the machine and is particularly suited for production of high value components such as molds, electrodes and production parts, in particular, 3-D complex parts. The portal and the base of the machine are made of polymer concrete. This composite offers excellent vibration damping characteristics - approximately 10 times greater than cast iron and significantly better than a welded construction, and is significantly more thermally stable then cast iron.. A high degree of damping is essential w hen working with high feed rates, high acceleration, and requirements for superior surface finishes. The structure of the HSM500 makes it ideal for difficult applications, such as hard metal machining, where any transmitted vibration leads to increased wear or fracturing of the cutter. Most of the machines 12,125 lbs is in the base and the portal. The relatively large mass provides for an exceptionally rigid machine tool structure. The worktable, X- axis, Y axis and Z-axis slides are made of high strength cast iron. These elements, reinforced by longitudinal ribs and wide sections, assure that the machine components provide optimal rigidity. The supporting areas of the guides are ground enhancing the total geometrical accuracy.
